about
The Bear Origin Myth is almost identical among the Khanty, Mansi, Karelian and Finnish. In all of them the bear’s home is in the star constellation of Great Bear. The first bear was lowered to earth in a silver sling and a golden cradle. The Origin of the Bear was sung to Artturi Kannisto by Konstantin Atjin during two days in October 1905 in Sosva. This version has over 300 verses and it is one of the most detailed examples of the myth. In this time, the bear cub is a girl, living in abundance together with her celestial father.
In my version I have remained true to the essence of Aitjins hypnotic melody. As I can’t produce words with the violin, I have taken the liberty of colouring the melody emotionally, reaching towards an interpretation that would freely paint the altering emotions of the myth.
