about
Roopeska’s Bear Hunt was also sung by Jakov Tasmanov with over 200 verses in length. It describes in detail the nature along the waterway from Roopeska’s home village to the distant riverbank full of delicious sarvisberries. After finding such an excellent spot, Roopeska returns and brings many more villagers to pick up the berries. But this time they are not alone. A bear has found the spot and becomes angry and jealous over the treats.
The poem takes a humorous turn in describing the surprised and scared villagers. And even the angry bear tangles his head inside a berry-picking-bucket.
Melodically and rhythmically this song has a strong resemblance with Hungarian folk songs. I am particularly drawn to it’s neutral treatment of major and minor thirds. My version in this record is an improvisation over the generic theme and feel of the original melody.
